Frequently Asked Questions About
Visioning / Strategic Planning
The Visioneering Seminar is just for our
school leader, right? Shouldn’t all of our
leaders attend?
God’s Way is to give His vision to His leader. Think of
Abram leaving his home or Moses on Mt. Sinai. Other
leaders are deeply involved after the vision is given. When
Moses received God’s vision for the Tent of Meeting, the
specifics — crafting the implements of worship — were
completed by other leaders - Bezalel and his skilled
artists. But the vision was given to Moses.
How do we know our leader will get it right?
Simply, God is faithful. If you are confident that you have the right leader, God will impart the vision. In addition,
your consultant will guide the process and help your leader articulate the message.
Shouldn’t this be something our leader can do on his own? Can’t we do this by
ourselves?
There are many reasons why a leader cannot accomplish this on his own. Sometimes, leaders hear and see
the vision, but have a hard time translating it into words. This is not the leader’s fault, it just may not be in his
skill set. Sometimes leaders cannot, by themselves, get away from the clutter of everyday life and into God’s
meeting place without an agenda to do so. Even if they are able to get away, some have difficulty separating
God’s vision from man’s vision.
A Christian school is a spiritual undertaking and must be approached God’s way. The Biblical model for vision
setting is clear: God gives vision to the leader and the vision resonates in the heart of the praying believers who
fast and pray for that leader.
Given the realities of 21
st
Century life, only an objective, spirit-filled, pastor — leader can enter into the holy
place where God gives His vision to your leader. Everyone else in your community has a history with your
leader that can result in “man’s vision” getting in the way of God’s vision. Your consultant will assure that the
articulated vision is truly God’s.
I’m not familiar with this process. We, the appointed school leaders, take our
responsibilities seriously. Aren’t we really stepping aside from our responsibilities?
Quite the opposite! You are, like Aaron and Hur, holding up Moses’ arms. What would have happened if Aaron
and Hur did not uphold Moses’ arms? We can speculate on the outcome, but two things are certain — Aaron
and Hur fulfilled their responsibilities and they were vital in the process.
As co-laborers with your school leader, you are vital in the process. In the Prioritization Seminar you will help
implement the vision. You will count the cost, measure the impact, develop an implementation plan, choose a
project manager and set accountability standards.
Brain-storming sessions and strategic plans have their place, but only when they are guided by God’s vision,
clearly articulated by your leader.
When should Visioneering happen?
There are many times in a school - ministry’s life when visioneering is crucial.
•
Before a school is announced to the public
•
When major changes — like capital campaigns, church/school liaisons or separations – are needed or
contemplated
•
When a major crisis presents itself
•
When the school seems “stuck in mediocrity”
•
When a new leader takes over
